Rich Country, Smart Country? Investigating GDP and World University Rankings

This scatter plot shows how university rankings relate to GDP, with both metrics represented as percentiles. Each dot corresponds to a country in a given year. Most countries with low GDP display a wide range of university rankings, indicating no strong or consistent link between economic performance and education quality. However, countries with high GDP tend not to have poor university rankings. The Philippines, shown in red, consistently ranks low in both GDP and university rankings, with some fluctuations over time. In contrast, the United States, highlighted in blue, maintains both high GDP and strong university rankings over the years. This pattern suggests that economic stability may support consistent educational performance, although it is not the sole factor.
