Beneath the Surface: Regional Disparities in Aquaculture Production and Value
Aquaculture in the Philippines shows significant regional variation, not just in production volume, but also in economic value. BARMM leads in total volume, largely due to extensive seaweed farming, but its value-added remains comparatively low given the modest market price of raw seaweed. In contrast, Central Luzon and Western Visayas perform strongly in both volume and value, driven by high-value species like bangus, tilapia, and prawns, supported by better infrastructure and access to processing facilities. These trends highlight how regional aquaculture systems are shaped not only by environmental conditions, but also by market integration, investment, and adaptive land-use strategies.
